What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon cleansing, also known as colonic irrigation or colonic hydrotherapy, involves flushing the colon with fluids to remove waste. It’s a practice that’s been around since ancient times, and the benefits are based on the premise that digestive waste can be a toxin to the body.

Generally, a professional called a colonic hygienist performs the colon cleanse while you rest on a table. It involves sending approximately 60 liters of fluid through a tube into the rectum. Toxins are then expelled through a different tube, and the process is repeated.

The Benefits of Colon Cleansing

Depending on your reason for undergoing colonic hydrotherapy, you could benefit from some of the following results:

  • If you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), the treatment has helped to show signs of improvement from symptoms such as constipation, abdominal bloating and trapped gases associated with the condition. As colonic hydrotherapy is a completely safe and natural way of removing substance build-up, there’s no need to worry that the treatment may interfere with the body’s natural processes.

  • Skin improvements are greatly noticed with the results of colonic hydrotherapy. With the skin being the largest organ in the body, it can get overwhelmed with all of the waste and toxins building up in the colon which can eventually manifest itself in the form of acne or a dull complexion. By flushing out all of these toxins, there’s less chance of this happening.

  • Although not strictly a weight loss treatment, colonic hydrotherapy flushes out a mass of old hardened, faecal matter that can weigh between 5 and 20 pounds in the average person. Because of this, people report immediate weight loss after their first treatment, and some people see significant weight loss after a successful course of treatments.

  • Bad breath can sometimes be caused by problems in your bowel, so by removing all of the built up waste and toxins, this can see a great improvement.

  • Colonic hydrotherapy can have great results for people suffering with chronic fatigue and depression. By cleansing the body internally, it has a positive effect on the mind and has proved to alleviate stress and make you feel healthier due to a reduced number of toxins in the body.

  • Eczema and Psoriasis are two other conditions that can see improvements from colonic hydrotherapy, due to the removal of toxins in the body showing great results for the skin.

One small pilot study done in 2016 noted improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms after colonic irrigation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

What to expect during your colon cleanse

A small tube, called a speculum, is gently inserted into the rectum which allows it to introduce warm filtered water into the colon. As the water enters the colon, it causes a feeling of fullness for a short amount of time, followed by a relaxing feeling as the colon is emptied. The speculum allows for the safe entrance of water and the release of waste and toxins.

The treatment is repeated several times and the therapist will massage your abdomen in order to ensure that the colon receives a full, effective cleanse. The treatment generally takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and results in a cleaner colon with a loosening of old faecal debris.

Prior to treatment, the therapist will conduct a full consultation and medical questionnaire, also providing a full explanation of the equipment and procedure. With most patients, there’s usually a lot of concern and embarrassment about the treatment and the exposure of the body. However, it’s careful to remember that therapists are fully qualified at performing this procedure and completely understand the sensitivity and need to preserve the patients’ dignity at all times.

This means that you will be given privacy to get changed, and only a few moments of exposure will happen while the speculum is inserted into the rectum, and after that, you will be covered completely for the entire treatment. Rest assured, the waste is always discreetly drained away and releases no mess or odours.

Depending on the outcome of your consultation, your therapist will recommend how many colon cleansing treatments you should undergo.

This varies from person to person, and can be as little as just one treatment in a period of 1 to 3 months, or a course of up to 6. Following your initial treatments, it’s advisable that maintenance continues every 6 to 12 weeks to keep the colon free from any harmful waste and ensure the effectiveness of the first few treatments.
